Its projects encompass both public commissions and private clients. Today, the firm has approximately 30 ongoing projects spanning the globe, including locations in the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, the United States, and China. The firm currently employs over 150 professionals from diverse nationalities. Over the past two years, several influential cultural and public buildings have been completed: the Museum of Modern Literature in Mähringen, Germany; two projects in Iowa, USA—the Figge Art Museum in Davenport and the Des Moines Public Library; as well as two projects in Spain—the “Veles e Ventes” building for the America’s Cup sailing regatta in Valencia, and a community center in Madrid. In China, the firm has already completed the Liangzhu Culture Museum in Zhejiang and the Bailu Jun residential complex within the Liangzhu Culture Village in Hangzhou. Ongoing projects in China include the Jiushu Apartments in Hangzhou and the Rockfeller Bund Source redevelopment project in Shanghai. Other major projects currently under construction include the renovation of the New Museum on Museum Island in Berlin, Germany; the development of the San Michele Cemetery Island in Venice; the Courthouse Center in Barcelona, Spain; the Courthouse Square in Salerno; the Empire Riverside Hotel in Hamburg, Germany; The Hepworth, Wakefield gallery in Yorkshire; and the Hinter dem Giesshaus 1 gallery in Berlin, Germany. Recent museum and gallery projects undertaken by the firm include two expansion projects in the United States—the St. Louis Art Museum and the Anchorage Museum—and three museums in Italy—the Ansaldo Cultural Center, the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, and the Natural History Museum in Verona. In addition, the firm has designed mixed-use and residential developments, commercial office buildings, theaters, bookstores, and several private luxury residences. David Chipperfield Architects has won large-scale design competitions in more than 40 countries and at the international level, earning numerous prestigious international design awards and nominations—including accolades from RIBA, RFAC, AIA, and the Andrea Palladio Award. In 1999, Mr. David Chipperfield was awarded the Tessonov Gold Medal. In 2004, he was honored with the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) by the British Royal Family in recognition of his contributions to the field of architecture.
