Hangzhou Xixi Investment & Development Co., Ltd.: An International Tourism Complex Rooted in the Cultural Heritage of Xixi Waterways

X1 AIR is designed to provide artists with a space that supports their travel and artistic endeavors, allowing both domestic and international artists to “stay in Xixi,” making Xixi a “haven” for cultural and artistic exchange between artists at home and abroad.

Xixi is accumulating new history for Hangzhou. Our mission is to enable artists to renew and add new layers to Xixi, engage with local residents, and expand artistic activities in a vibrant and lively manner.

01 About X1

About the X1 Artist Residency Program

The X1 Artist Residency Program encourages individuals with a background in artistic research and contemporary thinking to immerse themselves in the Xixi Wetlands and engage in ongoing dialogue with the wetlands and the broader Xixi area. We focus on public and open-ended artistic approaches, emphasizing the connection between people and “place,” aiming to delve into the urban landscape through the lens of contemporary art and to reconstruct cultural history.

The X1 Artist Residency Program is openly inviting proposals from artists working in contemporary art, nature-based projects, post-dramatic theater, interactive media, installation art, music, and other related fields for residencies lasting between 7 days and 2 weeks. We look forward to receiving project proposals that combine visual impact, participatory engagement, and public relevance.

The program is divided into three main components: invitation-based residencies, open calls for both international and domestic applicants (with self-selected themes), and specialized art project residency calls.

■ The on-site program covers July to December, with no on-site content scheduled for October.

■ On-site creation lasts anywhere from 7 days to 2 weeks, depending on the form of the creative work.

04 X1 Exhibition

▷▷▷ Results Showcase

■ If the residency work is completed smoothly, the final residency creation will be presented at the Zhuangxiang Library of Licheng Xixuan Hotel on the last day of the residency.

■ If the on-site results are closely linked to Xixi, we will do our utmost to ensure that the exhibition is presented simultaneously at the Xixi Wetland Museum/Xixi Wetland and in the surrounding areas.

The Hangzhou Xixuan Hotel features a simple, modern architectural style that is rich in design. With floor-to-ceiling glass walls, it ensures ample natural light while allowing guests to fully enjoy the outdoor natural scenery—making it a paradise of pristine beauty that combines the charm of nature with the elegance of books and art.

The resident artists will engage in artistic creation in Xixi for periods ranging from 7 days to 2 weeks, gaining a deeper understanding of the area and immersing themselves in the urban landscape through the lens of contemporary art, thereby reconstructing its cultural history.

The X1 Artist Residency Program covers the following expenses:

Provide partial staff assistance and support for artists:

■ The Xixi Paradise Art Center team has extensive experience in hosting and managing artists both domestically and internationally. In 2019, they staged over 100 performances, welcoming 36 performing groups from 15 different countries and nearly 10,000 audience members.

Artists are responsible for their own expenses:

■ Living expenses, visa fees, insurance, personal spending, and round-trip local transportation

Artists, designers, photographers, playwrights, and others who wish to apply for the XI Residency Program may submit the following materials to the Xixi Paradise Art Center, including but not limited to:

■ Latest Personal Resume (with Photo)

■ Portfolio and related information for individuals who serve as representatives

■ On-site Duration Project Plan (Work Concept / Implementation Plan / Exhibition Proposal / Assistance Required for the Project)
